India urges SCO to take ‘uncompromising position’ on terrorism
Speaking at the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting on Tuesday in Tianjin, China, Jaishankar said the group must work to stabilize the global order and address persistent threats to its shared interests. He reminded attendees that the SCO was originally established to combat “the three evils” of terrorism, separatism, and extremism — issues he said are often interconnected.
Referencing a recent terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region in April, which left 26 people dead, most of them tourists, Jaishankar noted that such incidents aim to destabilize local economies and inflame religious tensions. “The SCO must take a clear and uncompromising stand on these threats to remain aligned with its core objectives,” he stated.
The meeting also included Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar. India has accused Islamabad of being behind the April attack and responded in May by targeting suspected terrorist sites in Pakistan-controlled territory. This exchange escalated into a brief military standoff before a ceasefire was declared after four days.
During the talks, Dar claimed that Pakistan seeks peaceful relations with its neighbors, according to the country’s Foreign Ministry.
Jaishankar also highlighted the importance of supporting Afghanistan, stressing that regional stability depends on aiding its people. He called on SCO members to increase development assistance, adding that India remains committed to doing its part.
The foreign ministers gathered in Tianjin to lay the groundwork for the SCO Heads of State Council meeting scheduled for August 31.
