US Senator Warns Against NATO Exit Amid Trump Threats
“What the president is proposing would shatter decades of bipartisan American leadership, undermine our credibility with allies, and embolden adversaries like Russia and China who would welcome nothing more than a fractured transatlantic alliance,” Warner said in a statement.
He stressed the enduring importance of NATO, noting, “For more than seventy years, NATO has been the cornerstone of American national security,” and called it “the most successful military alliance in modern history.”
Warner described Trump’s threat to exit NATO as “reckless” and “dangerous,” warning that it would “play directly into the hands of our adversaries.” He also rejected claims that the alliance is one-sided, highlighting NATO’s support after the September 11 attacks when allies deployed troops to Afghanistan. “To now suggest that this alliance is a one-way street is not only wrong – it’s an insult to those sacrifices,” he said.
The remarks followed Trump’s criticism of NATO members for not backing the US-Israeli war against Iran, and his threat to withdraw from the alliance. In a recent interview, Trump referred to NATO as a “paper tiger” and said that leaving is “beyond reconsideration.”
